The Lead Grades of Blackwing Pencils

Blackwing pencils are known for their distinctive design, smooth graphite, and cult following among writers, artists, and stationery lovers. First introduced in 2010 by California Republic Stationers, the modern Blackwing is a revival of the original Eberhard-Faber 602, used by legends like Stephen Sondheim and Frank Lloyd Wright.

Unlike traditional pencils that use the HB grading scale, Blackwing uses four core models, each designed for a different feel and purpose.

Soft:

BLACKWING MATTE

≈ 4B

The softest and darkest Blackwing. The graphite glides with minimal pressure and produces a rich, velvety line.

Ideal for sketching, shading, and expressive writing.

Balanced:

BLACKWING PEARL

≈ 2B or 3B

Balanced, a versatile option with a smooth, slightly firmer core than the Matte.

Great for journaling, light sketching, and daily writing.

FIRM:

BLACKWING 602

≈ B or 2B

Firm and dark. The pencil behind the slogan “Half the Pressure, Twice the Speed.” Firm and dark, it’s designed for longer writing sessions with minimal sharpening.

Great for long-form writing.

Extra Firm:

BLACKWING NATURAL

≈ HB or B

The firmest lead in the range. Holds a point longer and delivers a lighter, more precise line.

Best for note-taking, annotation, or detailed work.
